For a rugged wood-shake look, consider Grand Sequoia® IR Shingles. They are a fraction of the cost of traditional slate, wood shakes, or expensive metal roofing and they pass UL 2218 Class 4 Impact Testing. Roofing Annex is a big fan of this shingle due to the regular wind driven 1.5″ hail that tends to hit a roof every 5 years or so. This is one of the most impact resistant shingles available!
Grand Sequoia® Shingles feature artisan-crafted shapes combined with oversized tabs and a dimensional design, resulting in a sophisticated beauty unmatched by typical shingles. Their specially formulated color palette is designed to accentuate the shingle’s natural appeal.
Quick Facts About The UL 2218 Class 4 “Impact” Test
The UL test drops a 2″ steel ball from 20′ onto the top of a shingle to see whether the shingle cracks.
First Image: Results on a standard shingle – it often has ruptures or cracks visible on the surface or back immediately after impact.
Second Image: Results on a special UL Class 4 shingle – impact-resistant shingles show no evidence of tears, cracks, or ruptures on front or back after impact.
